Scottish?

This is probably a bagpipe tune and scottish. But you don't see many scottish slides do you? (you might though). It may of origanally been a jig then changed into a slide? oh well never mind it's a great tune anyway no matter what type it is!!

Irish?

The Oslo-based band Tara recorded this one, with another slide "familiar" to this, on their cassette(!) back in the day. I will ask the remaining members of the band about where they got this one from.

"Cnoc na gClarac" / "Tom Carroll's"

The second name for this tune is again from Dan Herlihy's creative license to rename an old boot, but as such is non-standard...

The following is another transcript courtesy of Ptarmigan, taken from the playing of Dan Herlihy And John Drew on their recording "The Ballydesmond Polka":

M: 12/8
L: 1/8
R: slide
K: Dmaj
|: d2 f |
e3 efe d2 f a2 f | e3 efe d2 B B2 A |
e3 efe d2 f a2 f | ede f2 e d3 :|
|: dcB |
A2 a f2 a A2 a f2 a | e3 efe d2 B B2 d |
A2 a f2 a A2 a f2 a | e3 efe d3 :|

NOTE: The only editing I've done is to change Ptarmigan's 1st and 2nd endings into lead-in notes ~

|: d2 f | ~ & |: dcB | ~ instead of:

~ |1 ede f2 e d3 d2 f :| & |2 ede f2 e d3 dcB ||
~ & ~
~ |1 e3 efe d3 dcB :| & |2 e3 efe d3 d2 f ||

Nelly Mahony's

This is definitely an Irish tune. It comes from the Sliabh Luachra area.
The summer of 2006 I was at the Catskills Irish Arts Week and the then owner of the Fern Cliff, Con had his father visiting from Ireland. We were chatting about music and he lilted a slide for me (in his own special way). He said his aunt wrote it. I asked what her name was and he said Nelly Mahony. I had remembered hearing the tune on a Tabache CD and later when I looked it up I was surprised to find it named Nelly Mahony's.
