Goodbye to Ireland in D

This tune is NOT the popular Farewell to Ireland in AMix as posted by Jeremy. This tune is the first cut off the Cathal Hayden CD.

I've supplied the basic framework, but Hayden provides additional variations and ornamentation that one would benefit from a listen. The entire CD is worth owning and I vow to learn all the tunes!

Austin Tierney's

I and everyone else I play with know this one as Austin Tierney's. There's another version of it here: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/846. The version I know is closer to this one. I know Farewell/Goodbye/Whatever To Ireland as a different but very similar sounding tune, also in D: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/4403.

And, thanks, Dow, for that bit of information. Interesting how two totally different tunes can have the same name. I wonder if Austin Tierney recorded it, wrote it, or???

The Flying Column is another name I've seen for this. See a 3rd transcription of it here http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5462.

Older sources

This tune already appears in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) as 'Farewell to Erin'. From there it was (presumably) picked up by O'Neill, without even bothering to change the title, as was his usual practice. It shows up twenty years later in the Roche Collection of Traditional Irish Music (vol. 3, #73) as 'The Flying Column' and made it from there to Bulmer and Sharpley's book from the 1970's under that title. You could call this a well-travelled tune, I suppose.

Austin Tierney's/Farewell To Eireann duplicate?

I reckon this might also be the same tune http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5097
