The Huckleberry (hornpipe)

Definitely one for the fiddler's party-piece repertoire, which is when I've heard it played.
Composed by Byron Berline, and this arrangement by Dr Gary Smith.

A great fiddle tune

Many thanks for posting this tune.I requested it some time ago.I have the original recording of Byron and Country Gazette playing it.

well this tune is part Jimmy Martin's Arab Bounce (first part) and the 2nd 2 parts are indeed Huckberry Hornpipe. In truth, Arab Bounce and the first part of HH have the same general shape... but to my ear this version is clearly AB and not HH. Interesting.

Not Byron Berline's Huckleberry Hornpipe!

I have to agree with kbar. This does not much resemble the Huckleberry Hornpipe I know or that was originally played by Byron Berline who composed it. Maybe it has evolved as a result of being played in many sessions (some not Bluegrass) and on different instruments.
I learned it some time ago and this is what I play the first time through.

Harrisonix's version is close to what I play

Which I learned from Dan Crary's "Lady's Fancy" album (Berline was the fiddler). The two should be swapped as the original posting looks more like a variation.

Thanks for clarification.

I'm glad that Lazyhound has clarified the provenance of this tune which makes it clear that the Dr. Gary Smith version is an arrangement.

Original Huckleberry Hornpipe appears as variation.

I really like this tune so I posted the abc above to make Byron Berline's version appear as a variation in downloaded abc files of this tune from this website. Unfortunately, Dr. Smiths version seems to appear on many abc websites on the internet.
