The Longford Tinker

An unusual three-part reel in that each part is played only once through before moving on to the next (ABCABC). Made famous by the Bothy Band in their set with Martin Wynne's #2. And a good workout for those rolls....

This is a cousin (perhaps a derivative) of the Scottish reel, Jenny Dang the Weaver - and occasionally goes by that name. The Scottish tune doesn't have the third part. In fact, why don't I post it?

Doesn't sound Like Jenny Dang the Weaver

This tune doesn't sound very much like Jenny Dang the Weaver to me--this starts in Bm, Jenny starts in D--where did you get that information from?

Pchaffee, Paul McGrattan surely plays this tune as Jenny Dang the Weaver on the whistle. Check out his "Frost is all over." It's a nice one.

Whadayamean?

Sorry--don't know what you mean by "plays this tune as Jenny Dang the Weaver"--? You mean "calls it..."? I still don't see much of a resemblance btw these two tunes.

# Posted on January 19th 2003 by pchaffee

Yes, the two tunes have different impressions at first, but the first and second parts of this Irish setting is certainly based on the Scottish one (http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/380).
I recommend you to buy the CD "The Frost is All Over." You'll see Paul McGrattan definitely calls it Jenny Dang the Weaver.

I'd much rather play Jenny Dang. The 3rd part of this sounds to me as though it has been added as an afterthought - it's *so* tiresome. The rest is okay though I suppose.

Yeah, well no, not that one, the one in D @ Slainte's link above - I like that one.

# Posted on June 9th 2003 by Dr. Dow

I like both

# Posted on June 9th 2003 by gian marco

Yeah, they're both okay, it's just that 3rd part of Longford does nothing for me. Anyway...

# Posted on June 9th 2003 by Dr. Dow

I also like both ones, but yeah, the other one is simpler, compact, and more effective. I've been satisfied with that D major one, so I don't feel like learning this one very much. Maybe I'm just lazy, though.

As I wrote in the comment space of D maj one, this was originally mouth music, and in this point it is one of good and interesting examples of how Scots tunes have been arranged in Ireland.

Jinnie *Bang* the Weaver

That's the title Sean Keane gives to this tune. Is it a typo?

# Posted on January 24th 2006 by slainte

It's known as "The Concert Flute" on Finbarr Dwyer's "Pure Trad Music on Accordian".
