The Apple Tree

Someone gave me this tune at a Clonmel workshop last year. It's on a recent list of Scottish tunes http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/4239, so if it's the same one then it must be Scottish. Come to think of it, it has got something of the flavour of a Scottish reel about it. It's a good lively reel to play, and not too difficult for beginners.

Scottish

If it's in A major, then it must be Scottish. ;-)

The Apple Tree

Ah, but sometimes I like to play G maj tunes in A maj :)

The Apple Tree

For the fiddle, try transposing this tune down to G; this gives a marvellous opportunity for open G-string drones in bars 1, 2, 5 and 6 of the second part. Then go straight into the full 4-part version of The High Road to Linton in A.

That will turn it into an Irish tune then. :-) Ach well, The High Road To Linton will always be Scottish , I suppose

The Apple Tree

"The Apple Tree" was composed by Scots fiddler Carl Volti (nee Archie Milligan) in the 18th century. A short biog can be seen at
