Babes in the Woods

This song was sung as a lullaby by my mother and grandmother. I don't know how old it is. It is probably from late 1800's to early 1900's. I would like to know the composer.
The words are:
My dear do you know how a long time ago
Two poor little children whose names I don't know
Were stolen away on a bright summer's day
And were lost in the woods so I've heard people say.

And when it was night so sad was their plight
The sun it went down and the moon gave no light
They sobbed and they sighed and they bitterly cried
Then the poor little things they laid down and died

And when they were dead the robin so red
Brought strawberry leaves and over them spread
And all the day long he would sing them a song
Poor Babes in the Woods, Poor Babes in the Woods.

The words are kind of morbid but typical of old timey songs. Lots of shmaltz. The tune is very nice.

Babes In The Woods

I can remember my mom singing this song to me as a child. I couldn't remember the exact words so this is great. Now I can sing it to my grandchildren.
