Jig or slide?

To my ears, this sounds a lot more like a slide than a jig.

Does anyone else think so?

Dan Sullivan's Father?

Isn't this more commonly known as "Bill Collins' " jig ? It is a 6/8 rather than a slide, but I agree, Jeremy, it does have the "feel" of a slide about it.

Yep, written in 6/8 the phrases carry over two bars. They'd fit into 12/8 just fine. Either way, I'd call it a slide.

Slide or Jig

It must be what you get used to in that we always play this as the "Bill Collins" jig followed by the Kilmovee and Dan the Cobbler - everyone seems to be OK with the 6/8 timing.

As a PS to my original comment, I think the difference is in the first phrase of the first bar where we've always played dAA rather than d2A shown here. This gets your mind into 6/8 rather than slide mode.

"Bill Collins' Jig" / "Dan Collins' Jig" / "Dan Collins' Father's Jig"

Bill Collins, an Irish musician from Gort in County Galway is father to Dan Collins of Shanachie Records fame and infamy... It seems that because of a recording by DeDannan this tune too often gets confused with another melody's name ~ that of "The Hearty Boys of Ballymoate", or Ballymote, or "The Boys of ~"... It isn't the same melody. Hey Slainte, that tune isn't on site yet!!!

It's called "The Hearty Boys of Ballinamore" on the Champions of Ireland: concertina CD but this is probably a mistake.

Boys of Ballymote

This tune is on Wolfstones album, the chase. (except they spell in ballymoat)

Its also in 'HO-RO-GHEALLAIDH volume two of session tunes for scottish fiddlers', which is a great book

The more I reacquaint myself with this the more I realize I've played it in both keys and mixed with slides and jigs. However you take it, it's a fun tune.
