Flogging Reel (NYC/Sligo Setting)

I learned this setting from Tony DeMarco who learned it from Martin Wynn. This is classic NYC/Sligo stuff & I'm sure many fluters & pipers will like the 'c part'. no F nat's

The Fogging Reel

This is actuaaly an old scottish pipe tune called "The Flagon Reel". The irish stole it, jazzed it up and then gave a slightly different name. This tune is also recorded by Blazin' Fiddles on their new album "The Old Style".

Murphys mob

Murphy's mob does this tune in a set with Donegal Tinker, Flogging Reel, Castle Kelly and Foxhunters.

A great banjo-tune when played fast. Fun too.

I play this tune with some f naturals in the last part, I think it sounds better that way.

Here's a version with the Fnaturals

The flogging

this tune is in o'neills with f naturals in the third part, sounds much better in my opinion, although obviously not much use for flute players

In my opinion, It's not the Flogging Reel without the F naturals which is one of the things that makes the tune special.

But I heard it's not uncommon to play the tune with F naturals in the last part among pipers.

Sorry, I mean "it's not uncommon to play the tune with F *sharps* in the last part among pipers." I recently learnt to play the tune with F naturals on the keyless flute using a cross-fingering.

Heard Jerry Holland playing this last night. This is a Cape Breton setting from Live at West Mabou Hall:

It's also on An Fir Bolg...

...by Jack Talty and Cormac Begley, a John Kelly version.

Bannerman beware: there's no F naturals in their version!
