The South Shore/The Scholar
Recognise it from somewhere? That's right, it's what is more commonly known as "The Scholar" but slightly different and in hornpipe form. "The South Shore" is a composition by James Hill, 19th century fiddler who was originally from Scotland but spent much of his life in Tyneside composing hornpipes in weird keys like Bb. I learnt this tune from a Northumbrian piper/fiddler when I was at school, but didn't learn "The Scholar" until many years later. I assume "The South Shore" gets played as an unswung hornpipe/reel also, and that "The Scholar" is derived from this tune.
