The Green Mountain

The transcription of this popular tune already posted here is really awful. It should be a really nice version, but who will try to memorise this messy transcription and to play it accurately?

I have a somewhat unusual setting of the tune, which is mostly based on the playing of the band "Moving Cloud." I don't know who introduced it to them.

As you know, "The Green Mountain" is widely known as a cousin of another popular tune "The Maid behind the Bar," and this particular version of G.M. interestingly shares the same conspicuous phrase with it.

Green Mountain

Here's a fairly "plain jane" setting of the Green Mountain, suitable for flute, whistle, or fiddle. Anyone who's not up for the rolls yet, just hold those notes for the length of three eighth notes and you'll at least get the timing right.

Actually the version I posted above is a mixture of Moving Cloud's setting and mine. Here is what I normally play, which is interestingly different from what Will added:

I learned the version while I was staying in Leeds, Yorkshire, where Vincent Broderick's composition "The Tinker's Daughter" is quite common among both the ceili band's members and the session players. Now you see the second part of the tune sneak in The Green Mountain.

Green Mountain from Gort session recording

Hiroyuki, your Moving Cloud version is very similar to the one played on the Gort session recording. With the Bm stuff in the B part, it's like a cross between Green Mountain and Maid Behind the Bar. "The Green Maid Behind the Mountain" perhaps? :o)

Will, check John Carty's classic banjo album. He also recorded what you call "The Green Maid behind the Mountain." Too complicated to transcribe, obviously.

This is one of the tunes I learned recently. Yes, its similiar to the "Maid behind the bar". I prefer playing this tune on rolls.

Boston-born box player Colm Gannon recorded a version of the tune which is similar to the ones Will and myself transcribed above. He cites Donegal fiddler Neilidh Boyle as the source.
