I got this off "The Wind Among The Reeds" but I haven't got the liner notes. Is this trad or a recent composition?

D mix ?

That's a great tune at leat to my tate.
Isn't the mode D mix the corrext one?

I'd treat this as straightforward G major like "Out On The Ocean". I find it very difficult to view this as Dmix, but if you can find suitable Dmix chords then I'd be interested to try them out.

Dow,
as a whistle/pipes player I'm not so wise about chords, I just had the feeling this tune has its centre at D, not G.

It does look like it centres on D on paper because it goes down to D a lot, and the parts end on A, but the notes G and B are stated repeatedly in the melody, and these outline a chord of G, more or less blocking Dmix as a possibility (unlike tunes such as "Blarney Pilgrim" for example, where there are more A's and C's). This means that the mode is G Ionian (major) or E Aeolian (minor). Also, you probably feel that D is the centre because a drone on D sounds really good in this tune (which it does). In this case a (pipes) drone on D would be sounding the 5th and would not indicate that the actual fundamental is D.

I learned this tune from John Skelton who said that Tommy Keane had found it in an old manuscript. Great tune!

Version I learnt unornamented. I learnt it as Paddy Kelly's jig.

"Paddy Kelly's Jig" ~ & further comment from PaddyCmusic

Key signature: A Dorian
Submitted on August 7th 2006 by PaddyCmusic.

"I got this tune from my old banjo teacher. It's an easy tune to learn and I've never heard it recorded anywhere. I wonder is it infact a Paddy Kelly composition. I'm not sure.

I've transcribed it (above) unornamented but there is a lot of room for ornamentation and variation particulary on whistle/flute and possibly fiddle, though I'll leave a fiddle player to answer that one.

I was given this tune to play as a set after the jig, "The Gandor in the pratie hole".

I would rate this jig alongside tunes such as "The Leg of the Duck" which seem quite repetitive yet offer lots of variation oppurtunities."
