C is for Craic

Quite possibly my favorite tune of the moment, this one comes from the playing of fiddler Willie Kelly. It appears on his CD with fluter Mike Rafferty "The New Broom". Most of the CD is comprised of duets with the aforementioned Mr. Rafferty, but this tune is one of several lovely solos by Willie. While the duets on this CD are excellent (& with fine bozouki accompaniment by Donal Clancy, I might add), I found myself waiting for the solos to hear what each player sounded like individually, so sympathetic was their playing together! The tune is named for the 1983 All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Champion of the same name, from whom Willie says he got the tune. He also indicated that Jimmy McBride has since then passed away; if this tune is any indication of this man's music, then we've been robbed of quite a lot...

Barmaid

I'm fairly certain that this is the version of the "Barmaid" in "C", as recorded by Brendan McGlinchey, and certainly by Cathal Hayden. I seem to remember an obituary to Jimmy McBride in "Treoir" some years ago. Again, this is subject to the vagaries of the memory banks, but I think he was killed in a car crash, and was only in his 20s at the time. A very sad loss, indeed. I thought this might have been here already, but apparently not. I think it can stand on it's own, as it's so different from the better-known reel in "D".

Dude. I've been listening to this tune non-friggin'-stop. Glad we're on the same page here, Jay.

Cheers,
Armand

You're right Kenny. This gets played in Sydney as "The Maid Behind The Bar in C". There are a few phrases that remind you of the Barmaid and Maids of Castlebar family of tunes, but it's really a different tune isn't it?

The Haymaker

Randal Bays plays this as "The Haymaker" on his album "Out of the Woods." Great little tune.

The Haymaker

Paddy Cronin also called this The Haymaker on his Rakish Paddy LP, indeed perhaps that's where Randal got it. Years ago I got a tape with a pub recording of Kevin Glackin playing "McGlinchey's Reels," this one and Splendid Isolation. Nice to have the McBride title for it, as that's the one on various recordings I have.
