But the assured way with which the band delivers its sweet harmonies on the opening track ("The Broom of Cowdenknowes") proves the Ladies can sing as well as they can play their fiddles, flutes, and accordions. They've invited a host of guest artists to perform with them, including folk singers Luka Bloom, Tom Chapin, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger; instrumentalists fiddler Brendan Mulvihill, banjo picker Eric Weisberg, and Chieftains member and flautist Matt Molloy; and the legendary Irish balladeers the Clancy Brothers. In a particularly moving gesture, the six band members pay tribute to their families by playing a lovely version of "The Queen of Connemara" accompanied by their fathers and brothers. The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone is a departure from Cherish the Ladies' previous dance-tune-based recordings, but the quality of the singing is so good that you don't miss the jigs and reels. --Michael SimmonsRIJXR2CG1RHBLVB000065T2Vhttp://www.amazon.com/Hearts-Desire-Niamh-Parsons/dp/B000065T2V%3FSubscriptionId%3D1381NR6E6SFZJMPGXH02%26tag%3Dthesession-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000065T2V119763http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL75_.jpg7475http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL160_.jpg158160http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL500_.jpg297300http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL30_.jpg3030http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL75_.jpg7475http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL160_.jpg158160http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31NQPX1DSCL._SL500_.jpg297300Niamh ParsonsAudio CD00482481219271698USD$16.98Green Linnet12002-05-144055020490MusicABIS_MUSICGreen Linnet2002-05-14Green LinnetHeart's Desire0482481219271024USD$10.24569USD$5.69191400Amazon.comLike June Tabor and Jean Redpath, Irish singer Niamh Parsons (pronounced Neeve Parsons) has a nimble yet long-breathed alto capable of endless and elusive shades of emotion. On this set, which is dedicated to her late father, her material is delicately autumnal. At least half of the songs deal with loss of one sort or another, and even the upbeat tunes seem to harbor a tinge of wistful remembrance. The arrangements run toward chiming, sparsely applied guitars and mandolins, with a couple of lively instrumentals tossed in for good measure. Josephine Marsh, a Clare-based accordionist whom Sharon Shannon has often cited as one of Ireland's best, is heard to great effect. Parsons's own sister Anne, Tony Gibbons, and Terry Coyne contribute subtly deferential backup vocals. But, ultimately, it is the unaccompanied ballads that grab the heart and won't let go, as the singer becomes the song and the storyteller becomes the story. --Christina RodenRI1AUFLCSHZ4JRLB00005204Ghttp://www.amazon.com/Compendium-Best-Patrick-Street/dp/B00005204G%3FSubscriptionId%3D1381NR6E6SFZJMPGXH02%26tag%3Dthesession-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00005204G136196http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL75_.jpg7575http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL160_.jpg130130http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL500_.jpg130130http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL30_.jpg3030http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL75_.jpg7575http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL160_.jpg130130http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21Q2KRXCW9L._SL500_.jpg130130Patrick StreetAudio CD00482481207221698USD$16.98Green Linnet12001-01-165455518497MusicABIS_MUSICGreen Linnet2001-01-30Green LinnetCompendium: The Best of Patrick Street048248120722909USD$9.09895USD$8.9527900
