4 stars Album almost wrecked by "loudness wars"

This is the only CD that I've listened to where the mastering is so loud that it actually distorts! All dynamic range is crushed into a muddy mess. I'm pretty tolerant of this stuff, but this is just incredible. It weird, because it seems well produced...it just sounds like I'm listening to it on a blown out car stereo.

I really love the music, and it's a great blend of pop with enough of an edge to make it interesting. It's nice to see a group of young people taking influence from interesting music and making it their own.

4 stars Super-pleasant surprise.

I'm not sure how this cd came into my possession, but I know I looked at the packaging and and band name and photos and thought to myself: this is probably going to suck... goth-punk chicks with more tattoos and attitude than ability.

But when I finally got around to listening to it, I started hearing what sounded to me sort of like an amped-up Jolie Holland fronting a more tuneful Sleater-Kinney. Power-trio guitar/drums/bass, each player with a lot of ideas to keep the songs from all sounding the same, nicely-sung harmonies and a heady mix of ragged aggressiveness peppered with effective swaths of instrospection and some nice production touches here and there.

For me the only drawbacks are the lengthy playing time (almost an hour, I would have left off the 6+ minute meandering acoustic track at the end for instance), and the somewhat pedestrian lyrics. Nonetheless, in my book G.I.A.C. is about 10 times cooler than the over-hyped Yeah Yeah Yeahs, for instance. Although looking at their website I see that this ripped-nylons and tats and spiky hair image seems to be at odds with the "we're appearing at Best Buy" and "makeup provided by Mac". Dude, get a GUITAR sponsorship or something!

I write this on the eve of their new album coming out and, from checking their website, a solid couple of months of touring. I wish them the best and will keep my fingers crossed, hoping they don't get swallowed up by the evil Music Biz Machine, and tell YOU, oh fan of awesome melodic emotive indie guitar rock, why not get this (very affordable) album?

5 stars Best Band Ever

When I first heard of Girl in a Coma, I thought the name was pretty lame, but after listening to just one track off their cd (their cell) I was hooked. Their music is like being inside a dream, I have to admit they've become one of my favorite bands. I bought the album July of last year, and it hasn't left the cd player in my car or my ipod. I urge you to take a listen, or you'll miss out on something great.

5 stars AWESOME!!

I love Girl in a Coma, check them out live if you can! The girls are great! I have been listening to them for the last 6 years or so and this is a CD that almost never leaves my disc changer

5 stars I Love This Record

Colin and I love Girl in a Coma. Looking forward to seeing them open for Morrissey in 2008!
