I play in this session. It's pretty laid back and friendly, and rarely crowded. Some weeks it's just four or five of us. A typical line up would be a whistle/flute or two, a couple of bodhrans, a couple of guitars, an accordion and a fiddle. We have problems regulating our speed sometimes, and there are often runaway tunes hurtling around, but we don't mind playing slow if someone can keep us that way. I try to get there for 8.30pm, but it's gradually creeping towards nine most weeks. Players get a free drink!
I've been going along to this local session the last few weeks. Atmospheric, lively pub. Just the one real ale - sometimes runs out. Mostly fairly fast diddley with a few slow airs and the occasional song. As Stan says, it's laid back and friendly. I'm sure a few more melody players would be made very welcome.
Thanks for your hospitality, guys. It was nice to meet you all, especially Richard. I had a pleasant evening with nice tunes. And I made it back over to New Hall safely! It was quicker on the way back - maybe because I knew where I was going - so it's probably only 2 miles max.
March 17 2008 will be more in the nature of a gig with a sound system and lots more songs, so no open session that night (pub will be very crowded). Normal open sessions resume the following Monday.
The Beaconsfield has suddenly closed. Last Monday we found the doors closed, so we traipsed en masse over the bridge to the next handy pub, the White Swan on Mill Road and had a good session there. I've just nipped in there, and it appears we are welcome to return so hopefully that will be our regular venue for a while. Next session then is Bank Holiday Monday. New tune-players are welcome. We're grateful to the Beaky for hosting the session for a number of years and hope it opens up again soon. Too many pubs are closing.

It's a great session. I had a fine time visiting in late September, and I'd like to thank everyone there for the great welcome, and the great tunes.
