I popped in on a Wednesday mid Spring-term and a regular said "you havn't come on the best night - they arn't very friendly". True to form, no effort was made by the regulars to welcome newcomers so I ended up stood at the bar and whenever a favorite tune came up, I played in the doorway then retired back to the bar.
As an old hand with a fairly large repertoire, I wasn't phased by this, wasn't over impressed with the standard and hopefully some friendlier students will have arrived this term.
CailiSoc members take note - take beginers and old-timers under your wing and welcome them. You never know who they may be.
Used to be a good session pub quarter of a century ago (along with the Broomhill Tavern, when I was a student at the Yoonie here. Was pleasantly surprised to learn it still has a session, but shame if it's not up to much. I get the impression they were being cliquey because they're learners and being defensive.
I called in for a pint on the way home from Scotland, a few years ago, and it hadn't changed then. So, I assume, at least it's still not a bad little boozer.
Dont forget that whilst the pub is fairly intimidating, there is another pub just down the road which is far more friendly, and do sessions nearly every night of the week (Thursdays is quiz night).
Fagans is the pub, and Monday nights I find to be most beneficial - playing music from folk through to bluegrass and jazz. Very nice, albeit if the pub a bit grotty.
Yeah, I played in Fagan's once about a decade or so ago. i didn't know it was still going as a session pub. Chris, have you posted it here as a session?
