There are two regular sessions here: every Friday night there is an Irish bash - I've never been, but I hear the standard is high; on second Mondays monthly there is a Welsh Trad session - well attended, very friendly, excellent standard, but several children come regularly and all are welcomed as long as they want to play/hear Welsh material. Things get going any time after 8pm. Musicians who are well known on the WTM scene attend regularly, as do students from the music degree course at Bangor, hence the good standard. I travel an hour-and-a-half's drive up from Wrexham as often as I can!
As of c4-8-05 I understand that the Nelson has closed due to bankruptcy. The weekly Friday night Irish session has transferred at least temporarily to a pub called The Faenol in a village outside Bangor (don't ask me which, I'm not local). The Welsh session on Mon 8-8-05 was cancelled and I am awaiting news of a new venue from the local regulars.
One thing is certain; these very long running Bangor area sessions will not stop. A new venue will be found, or there is always the possibility that new tenants at the Nelson may welcome us back in due course.
By the way, in response to banjoian's query above, I have now been to the Friday night session a couple of times and the craic is grand! Not many banjoists, to the best of my knowledge.
Apologies for tardy posting. The Nelson reopened under new management during summer 2006 and the weekly Friday night Irish session has returned there. The 2nd Mondays Welsh session also returned during the Autumn from its temporary venue at the Anglesey Arms in Menai Bridge - so all is restored to 'normal'.
Just thought I'd add some more detailed info as I was researching it for other use. Both Irish and Welsh sessions are going strong at The Nelson at present. I'm off to the monthly Welsh one this-evening.
