Dylans

Sunday afternoon, from 3pm - 6pm. Four host musicians, fiddle, guitar, banjo, flute. New session, started yesterday. I missed the first one but by all accounts it went very well. Small, busy Irish pub, good accoustics, sympathetic audience. Has great potential as it's right in the middle of Lewisham Town Centre, and just minutes from Lewisham DLR, so has good connections to the rest of London.

Oops!

Oops - meant to say, the link I've submitted refers mostly to the Woodman session, but I will add some stuff about Dylans soon.

Would have gone along yesterday afternoon if "real life" hadn't intervened. Glad it went well. I'll maybe get along for a bit next week.

This is not really a session at all but an accoustic rehearsed gig. The pub clientéle appear to constitute all manifestations of the missing link between humans and neanderthals but even worse because they are all out of their brains on something..might even be drink.

That said, all learners, bodhranists, shakey eggists, rainsticks, didgeridoo and tambourine players are always most welcome.

FINISHED

Good sources tell me - I wouldn't touch the place with a barge pole nowadays, personally - that this session has finished up. Mad Steve has f*cked it for everyone yet again.

NOT FINISHED BY A LONG SHOT

I went last week, a great session, good musicians, good atmosphere and the pub love it. And why post a message saying a session has finished if you don't know for certain yourself? I'm new to london but if 'Mad Steve' is a northern irish fiddle player then he is nowhere near having the place'f*cked'. great guys, great guinness GOOD CRAIC!

It was finished, to the best of my knowledge, when I posted that comment. I still wouldn't go near the place, or the players, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're welcome to it.

From strength to strength

This session is getting better and better (I've been going for about 8 weeks solid now). It starts at 5.30 and officially ends and 8.30 ish but there's a small congregation of us that stay on till 10 or 11. The pub is getting a lot more busy - and staying that way! The drinkers are all into the swing of it and as for the quote about pub being full of the 'missing link'!?!?!? - don't get me started. Great atmosphere, good beer, sound people, good musicians, some fine singers and a great craic :-)

I've been going about eight weeks solid now! Sounds nasty! Might be worth while changing your diet, or maybe a generous tablespoonful of syrup of figs. (My old nan used to recommend the figs option.)

Good to see some new blood on the Lewisham music scene. I've been a lurker on the fringes of the session crowd in Lewisham and its environs for some time.

I think you've hit the nail on the hed by singling this session out for praise. I'm always blown away when I get along on a Sunday. I particulary like the way that it's a truly open session. Open to people to take part ... like a real Irish session, there's no talent bar. People can sing or play regardless of whether they're "good" or not and regardless of whether the tunes they play are "hackneyed" or whether the songs they sing are the sort of songs that the "purists" of other local sessions would turn their noses up at. Iask you, what the hell's wrong wih somebody siging "Fields of Athenry" or "Star Of The County Down" or "Kevin BArry" or "Four Green Fields" if they want?

Open as well to diferent forms of music. This is the only session in the area where you're likely to hear (Eastern Europe) gypsy fiddle music, Scottish marches and waltzes, etc.

There are, as you may well know, other sessions in the local vicinity which are much less welcoming of strangers with their strange music, where Eastern European fiddle tunes would get short shrift and where anyone attempting The Fileds of Athenry would be the subject of behind the hand snickering. These self-appointed guardians of the tradition can go and take a swing for all I care. Good on the boys and girls at Dylans for showing Lewisham what a good session is all about.

I'm neraly tempted to get the pipes out next week! (Only joking ...)

here here, i'll second that lewishtradman. bring on the pipes! (it would be a welcome break from my dwidling accordion talents). I'll get to the doctors right away................. 8 weeks solid is quite painful! haha

Daniel,
You'd better let the doctor know also that your legs are stretched something chronic after them having been pulled so much.
There's a good lad.

Better and better

There was a good wealth of musicians down last night, a piper called 'gnome' i think, young pete somebody on fiddle (how I love another fast player!) his dad on box, malcom on percussion, chesney with a bazouki and all the regulars. There now seems to be a good selection of instruments and abilities each week. The numbers of patrons still varies week to week, partly because nobody seems to realise it's a weekly event - so spread the word! I'm off back to York for a few weeks as I'm broke but have a good time anyway guys. There is no session on the 24th and i'm not sure about new years eve. Have a good xmas everyone! see you in a month....

This Session Rocks!

# Posted on January 15th 2007 by Daniel Gott

Now starting at 6

Largely because of the footy crowd we're now going from round-about 6-9 with a few staying on afterwards. Still going strong!

Springtime at Dylans...

I've been a few times and it is bijou, friendly and skilled.
Boy! those guys could play their trombones and kazoos.

The main adventure, though, has been travelling back to civilization in SW London via public transport at midnight or there abouts on a Sunday night!! Especially after one or two dozen pints of "Wife Beater".

# Posted on March 13th 2007 by yhaalhouse

Just to note to everyone that the above comment is a joke of sorts, we don't have any trombones or kazoos! Although it might be quite funky to have a trombone later on in the night - offers anyone?

# Posted on March 15th 2007 by Daniel Gott

Trombones...

I'm sure I heard a trombone ...or was it a glockenspiel?
Don't worry!
Next time I'll bring my Hammond organ and Leslie cabinet.

# Posted on March 16th 2007 by yhaalhouse

Just to re-affirm - This session is fantastic! Anyone who loves the music should come down here (as many do already). I love it :)

# Posted on May 14th 2007 by Daniel Gott

Thanks to everyone that came to my birthday session last sunday, I had a great time!

Dylan's Lewisham - DEAD

Session over

# Posted on November 12th 2007 by Cath

Very sad but true. One of the longest running sessions in the area (4 and a half years) has bit the dust. A real tragedy. I promise I shall endevour to get another one going somewhere, sometime very very soon.

Dylan's
R.I.P
