Please note I am a traveller, not a local, I visit here once or twice a year. My info might be out of date.
I have always found this a varied and welcoming session, in a friendly pub. It is led (if it has a leader) by an English bloke who plays 5-string banjo, but he integrates it very well with Irish and Scottish music. The musicians all play in a lower bit, like a pit, so the ambient pub noise (from the punters in the higher bits) kind of floats over your head and doesn’t drown you out. Last visited May 2002.

The Dog's Bollix Session

I went to this session last Tuesday during a holiday down under. There was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It was quite a mixture of music and songs which happened between 9 and 12pm.
There was a fair selection of beer too.
Locals told me the story of the pub. About 20 years ago an Irish Folk Band called the Dog's Bollix Band played regularly at another venue in Auckland. The four of them decided to buy this pub which was originally a church. It is nice to know about a pub being owned by musicians and which has gone on to host a good session. The old band members still live in Auckland.

Amazingly Niels, I'd intended to be there on Tuesday night, but got delayed by a day (check the Kelly's Sydney discussion).
Carol Anderson has also been known to drop in there on her sailing trips so all you'd need is baldy Jim to feel right at home!
