This is a small session that has been pretty steady now for the last six months. It begins promptly at 4 pm and lasts until 6 pm, sometimes runs to 6:30. This time was selected mostly because it is quiet and before patrons start filling the place. Our host is Jason (mgr), who is most accomodating and encouraging. They have music here every night but Irish/Celtic only on Fri. so far. Foundation members play lead on fiddle or whistle, with guitar and/or bouzouki, harp/autoharp and hammered dulcimer and bodhran. Recently more people are arriving in time to listen and give us encouragement. So far we have resisted efforts to ampIify because we have more freedom to improvise and learn. There is a constant search for more tunes and I think we would welcome visiting musicians that played ITM, especially on wooden flute. There's no question but that we play for fun. As for repertoire, there are few repeats from week to week except for some favorites. Latest tunes learned/shared were "Green-Gowned Lass", Jean's Reel, Martin Rochford's, Catharsis. Call Phil at 304 599-6821 to get details directions and confirmation.
Our host-Jason, asked us to play for a later audience on St Pats so we agreed to use of two microphones (in the center) so we could be heard above the gathering patrons. Worked nicely and we didn't have any problems. We would probably do it again. The round of Jameson's was a special treat afterwards.
We had our first visitor, and she blended quite nicely with her contributions. New tunes added: "Bang your frog on the sofa", "Echoes of Killarney", "Kid on the Mt", "Ship in Full Sail", Concert by SOLAS afterwards (in Pgh) was unanticipated pleasure. So was the Penn Pilsener and Fat Head Ale.
We have been blessed with the addition of a real piper who has just begun to play the small pipes. Elbellows, bag, 3 drones and a chater with a 9 note scale G--a. He brings a lot of different types of tunes to the session, and the piping technique has influenced my flute playing. More cuts and strikes, and rolls as part of the tune can now be heard in what I am at least attempting.
The pub has had a change in ownership but the session continues. A small band of faithfuls including fiddle, bagpipes, guitars, whistle, hammered dulcimer. 4 - 6 pm Fridays.
