Musicians of all abilities welcome - we don't sing too much - mostly tunes. We need a fiddle player. The village of Cross ash is about 7/8 miles from Abergavenny. A very relaxed session.
Another great session! When you turn out on Monday night what you need is to come away with the feeling that it was worth turning out! Was the music good was the company good? Well despite a heavy cold I really enjoyed the session. Played loads of ITM and also pleased to join in the latest tunes from the boys - el condor pasa and greensleeves. Not my sort of tunes but it kept the punters at the bar at the bar!
We all went down to Cardiff last week to see Lunasa. Great night and it seems to have inspired us to bring in a few new tunes - can't be a bad thing. If you come along early ie. 8pm don't listen to the comments of the landlord as it may put you off!
The session at the Salmons has moved to the Hunters Moon at Llangattock Lingoed which isn't that far from Abergavenny. The Hunters Moon is an excellent venue - amazing rural pub - great landlord - great venue for a session please feel welcome to join us

We are still looking for a fiddle player so if you know anyone out there who wants to try out our style of session then send them along. It is worth noting that the Angel at Grosmont is a good venue. We have played there and we were warmly welcomed and hope to get back there soon.

T this time of year, it's also good to remember that taking the trouble to make the effort of coming out to a session is usually well rewarded by a stimulating and envigorating evening.
Certainly wakes the SO up in my experience.
Mind you though, Llanman, I don't think you'll see me for a bit, the effort of coming all the way down the M4 is a bit much for an old codger like me.
When a session moves around, attendance often tapers off. We've noticed that effect at our local session (about 7 years running), which just this fall switched from being in the same pub every week to rotating among 4 pubs week to week. Even with an email reminder to 40 or 50 musicians and punters, and a notice in the weekly entertainment roundup in the local newspaper, the number of people dropped off a bit.
Mind you, this isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as you still have a core group (at least two) of decent players to carry on.
But I think many sessions rely a fair amount on the serendipity factor--non-regulars dropping in--and this is enhanced by staying in the same venue over time. It's just easier for drop-ins to find you.
Or it could just be the post-holidays vacuum. Some people need a break after all the festivus (*wink*) socializing.
Not me--January and February are my favorite months of the year for sessions. Seems like momentum builds toward St. Paddy's Day, and the weather's conducive to sitting in a warm room over tunes and pints.
Yes I agree with the comment about moving sessions. Also it depen.ds which night, is Monday the best? We have a session in the Bush in Cwmbran on a Monday and some people could never make it, also it's a bit close to the weekend. We've also had problems cos it's now fortnightly (but not every fortnight!) so people aren't going to just drop in (or find no-one and never go again?). The best has got to be weekly in my opinion or monthly (1st of month etc.) to make it memorable! I read this before and put it on our site freewebs.com/torfaen but have only just noticed your changes. Have you tried all possible websites that list sessions in the area? I intend coming to your session some time - is there a contact phone no?
Saying you want fiddle players might make it sound like there's no-one at your session (what not even one fiddle player!). What intstruments do people have? Perhaps emphasize what you have rather than what you haven't! (All this is easy to say, but we've had the same problems round here!)

Hi Frezz - sorry for not replying sooner. We meet every Monday. Things are picking up - we have a banjo player, guitar, flute and a hammered dulcimer so we do need a fiddle player. The best sessions are the ones when some turns up and we have some fresh faces and fresh ideas.
