One of the best (irish) pubs in melbourne. honest, friendly and no pretence,no stuff nailed to the walls, just a great atmosphere. drop in and say gday. session is monday evenings, but live music every nite of the week.
I was in Melbourne a few weeks ago (on a Monday night) and found that the session had moved to the weekend. It would be worth checking with the pub when it's on rather than just turning up.
Is the 'Dan' still one of the best Session places in Melbourne? I'm going to visit the city around Christmas time and would appreciate any advice with regard to any good Irish pubs/restaurants/session.
Tearlach, I prefer the Quiet Man (Sunday), Corkman (Thursday?) and The Lomond on a Monday night but the Dan is still a good place to have a beer and it seems the sessions are still going. strong
Paul - I remember Poteen and their regular gigs at the Celtic Club
Tearlach, The Dan still runs on a Saturday night from sometime between 5 and 6 (usually towards the later end of that spectrum) until a varying time of the slightly later evening. Give me (or any of the other Melbourne people on the site) an email when you're around if you want to catch some tunes. It'll most likely vary slightly over the Christmas season but at the moment Melbourne has a session every night (two on Sundays).
The last session I went to in The Dan was with Simon Melia and Louis MacMannus. Scary to see how things turned out for them, but they were great times - and I've still got Poteen's old tape recordings to enjoy. Poteen was the band that first showed me the excitement of playing trad irish tunes & songs with drive and I'll never forget that experience. Nice to hear Paul is still going well. You were a big part of a musical legend back in the 80's.
The dan.
