Update: I just managed to fit in a sesh at the Quiet Man having not been there since May last year.
Very pleased to report that the session, and Billy Moran, are still going strong. A bit more crowded and noisy than usual perhaps as it is St Pats week, however the atmosphere was good, and as usual it thinned out and quietened down a bit after 9:30, so there was plenty opportunity for quieter instruments and tunes, or less confident players to have a shot.
A special treat was Emily Smith ( http://www.emilysmithband.com/ ) singing a few songs, she was in town for some festival gigs.
There are a couple of mikes aimed at the anchor sessioneers (Billy M and Tony O'Rourke) , transmitting to a pair of speakers further up the pub, however you are not really aware of them unless you sit too close to the speakers . It doesn't feel like a miked session, and they don't seem to be switched on unless it's really crowded and noisy. One of my favourites anywhere.

Will try to make the Quiet Man on Sunday, I've been there a few times. I will be the bloke with the embarrassingly prominent-looking shiny nickel-plated resophonic Donmo mando, patiently waiting for a tune I know and then joining in just as it changes to another one.
Have pity on me and come and say g'day.
Extra points to anyone who can explain the difference to me (again) between the various box and concertina systems, inglo, anglish, melordian accolodeon etc, and that thing that Billy plays. I'll get it one day.
Another great session on the 15th, never lets me down.
Visitors this time included Ruth the Flute from Tip and the Scottish fiddlers who live down the street as well as Robby the box from Warrnambool and Mossy Flanagan.
Not surprised to hear the Molans of Koroit have a hand in this pub. Miles better than yr average Plastic Paddy.

And the guitarists were mostly restrained, though I wonder f they realise how their combined volume tends to cancel out the melody instruments.
Don't be disheartened if you see too much of that sort of thing - it always thins out after nine pm, and then some very nice music gets played (and heard!). Stick around!

Another very good session on Sunday night. It's just a very welcoming and social session to beginners and strangers all, yet still attracts great players.
Billy has been ill but was in fine form nevertheless. I think his doctor said "don't give up the music"
But it's still going strong with Joe Fitzgerald and occasionally Colin MacLeod. Don't be alarmed if you get there at 5pm and find people singing into a mike - it settles down into a normal session by 9pm and keeps going
You can get to the QM by tram 57 from Elizabeth St - every 12 min up to 7.30, every 30 min after, and takes about 25 min to get there. Get off at stop 24 or 25, either side of the pub.
Last tram back to city about 11.15pm on a Sunday
A bit quicker to get the train, Craigieburn line, every 20 min from F|linders st, get off at either Kensington (12 min)or Newmarket (13min), and walk 5 min to QM. Last train back to town about 11.57pm but you may not want to hang around Newmarket or Kensington stations on your own late at night.
