This is a brand new session and is in a trial phase. We had the first one and they've asked us back for a couple more. The pub is trying to attract a more low key clientele and is doing so by hosting more acoustic music.
This session has a Scottish focus. Strathspey players are quite welcome. Borders tunes are very welcome too. So far our melody instruments are pipes, fiddle and flute. For accompanists we've got piano, guitar, zouk and bodhran. More melody players would be grand. Sangsters would be lovely too.
There is a session planned for November and December. If these turn out well we hope to do these fortnightly come the new year.
The November turnout was great and we had a few visitors thanks to Fadó and its lack of session this Sunday. Plus a couple more fiddlers arrived and an accordion as well as some accompanists. An added bonus was Gaelic singing. More of that please. Thanks to Slighe nan Gaidheal there is an active Gaidhlig community in the Pacific Northwest.
Irish tunes are grand but to keep it different (there are plenty of Irish sessions in the Puget Sound area) we will keep a Scottish (and Cape Breton) focus.
We had some more strathspeys and pipe marches. I think we'll try and get some more Borders tunes going for next time.
We're on again for December and 2 per month starting the new year is looking likely.
The December turnout was lighter but still good considering it was the Sunday before Christmas with so much going on. We still had at least one new face and a few rounds of strathspeys from the fiddlers. The music kept rolling into the evening.
Twice a month sessions start this month. They won't be on a regular rotation so drop me a note to check on the dates but they will still be on Sundays.
Session dates are set through June though not up on The Anchor Pub website yet. So far just the next one is up which is the 17th of January.
Thus far the session is developing into an intermediate session. There is a core that has been playing together for some time but are still growing a common repertoire. New tunes and musicians are welcome, keeping the Scottish focus.
The session is still going strong. We had hoped to settle into a regular schedule but between the the activities at the pub and those of our nucleus of players it's still a little jostled. But all of that is better than no session at all.
At our last session of March we had a great show of support as well as some songs by Seirm, the performance group from Slighe nan Gaidheal.
Today we had our nucleus of regulars play as well as a dedicated corps of listeners. We appreciate that they think we're worth spending their Sunday afternoon in a dark bar, especially on a sunny day like today.
We're on for April 25th. Rumor has it some step dancers will be there.
The Scottish session bug has spread a little which means the Anchor session will only be once a month since another venue has invited us to play.
The Anchor sessions will tentatively be on the 4th Sunday but we're fudging that next month to accommodate the Halloween reveling. So next up is October 24th.

Springing ahead
Unfortunately the February session was hampered by bad weather, out-of-town players and car failure.
The 27th of March is on and should be a strong one.
