Sheila (whistle, bodhran) & Ken (guitar, bouzouki) are setting up a new acoustic session at Clancy's to run once a month on Saturday's.
It will be predominantly Irish music, but anything goes! There will also be a mix of tunes and songs, fast and slow.
We want this to be a friendly session where everyone is allowed to have a go leading a tune or song and no-one is excluded. So leave your egos behind and get ready for the craic at Clancy's!
I will be there (whistle, singing) and I know its got the potential to be good. Email me if you want to ask anything.
The first session was a great success, a good atmosphere, a very appreciative audience and some great music. The general punters, though not great in number, clapped after every tune and loved the songs especially.
The publican was very happy and seemed to enjoy himself, so we now have a permanant booking for THIRD SATURDAY IN EVERY MONTH.
Please remember folks though, this is an ACOUSTIC session. We did have a electric bass, though it is good for some things, was not really appropriate for this kind of session.
Hope to get our talended accordion player joining this Saturday. Unfortunately, Stephen cannot be there but this should not deter Ken, Sheila and me (& hopefully Dan) from playing the odd Eastern European/Gypsy tune such as the Metsakukkia, which is Finnish, and I read on Jay Ungar's sleeves note that Finland at 26 deg longitude it is further East than Romania (25 deg). Anyway, the Metsakukkia is greatly enjoyed whenever we play it. And of course, a little bluegrass tune always goes a long way.
Another great session last night, we missed a few key players such as fiddler Steve, mandolin Steve and accordian Dan, but this was more than made up by a few new faces to this session. Yet again we had a small but very appreciative pub audience and have been asked back for the Saturday before Paddy's Day.
Musician of the night has to go to "Shanty" Jim whose rendition of Irish songs, Sea songs and especially his comic songs (the bricks one and the chihuahua one) had the punters, entranced and sometimes laughing hysterically.
If you want to come along to the friendliest session in town with a warm atmoshphere, Clancy's seems to be the place!
I popped into the pub a couple of weekends ago and the landlord told me the session was usually on the 3rd Saturday of the month - which would be tomorrow? Does anyone know for sure?
*ONE OFF SESSION* Paddy's Night at Clancys - Tuesday 17th March
For one night only, we're having a special Paddy's Night session at Clancy's bar, so if you're in the area, with nowhere to go, come on down, everyone is welcome. There will be free festive food and a drink if you're good!
Sorry it's been a while since I've posted. Session is still going strong.
Regulars are Ken - Guitar, Sheila - Whistle/Bodhran, Cath - Fiddle, Greg - Fiddle/Bagpipes, Tony - Fiddle, Steve - Mandolin, Yael - Sing/Whistle/Accordion, Malcolm - Bodhran/Percussion and lots of others who drift in and out.
Next session is Saturday 20th February from 9pm. In March we're taking a break from schedule to play on Paddy's Night - Wednesday 17th March from 8pm ish onwards.
We went last Saturday only to be told we were not needed, that coupled with being told to stop playing at 11pm on Paddy's Night so they can have the juke box on (we were especially asked to come and play!) and the disappearance of the promised food means it has run it's course.
Thanks for all of you who came and played, it was a good little session while it lasted!
You may occasionally find some of us down at the Gypsy Moth Tavern in Croydon on a Saturday eve, it's quite a way to go, but the pub audience love us!
