Brogans is a great venue. Right in the center of the town with good drink and service and ambiance. If you are travelling, there serve good food too. Very popular with tourists during the summer season which usually means that people are listening and quite appreciative of the music. There are sessions most nights of the week in the back bar, mostly hosted by Eoin O'Neill and Quentin Cooper (of the Ceili Bandits) and friends. If you are a fair or better musician you will find a warm welcome here. Sessions normally start about 9.30 and end at 12. Come and enjoy the craic.
I just got back from two wonderful weeks of music in Clare with two friends, which included two particularly fine sessions at Brogan's in Ennis on Tuesdays hosted by Eoin O'Neill and Quentin Cooper.
The first was a special (literally once-in-a-lifetime) event: Eoin's 50th birthday party. The place was packed with great players (among them Andrew MacNamara, Dympna O'Sullivan, Orla Harrington, Una Grogan, etc.), but when Eoin saw us come in, he insisted that we get our instruments and found us a place to sit. The music and craic went late into the night.
Eoin and a few of the other regulars urged us to return the following Tuesday, saying that they expected it to be much smaller and quieter, with January usually being a slow month. As it happened, there were almost as many musicians the second time (though fewer people in the pub overall). Dympna was there again, along with a lovely flute player, Breda O'Gorman. Johnny Rua was there playing flute, Jon Sousa played banjo, Michael Hopkins and Willie Cummins sang, ... It was another late night, though not quite as late as the birthday party.
Thanks, Eoin (and everyone else), for two great evenings!
