Wednesdays at the Thompsons Arms

Wednesdays 8.30pm at the Thompsons Arms. Flaxton is a village about 6 miles heading NE out of York on the A64. The pub is by the raiway crossing.

This is a friendly and informal gathering - a mix of ITM / STM and singaround.

That should, of course, read "by the *railway* crossing", which is about 400 yds outside the village, on the north side.

Here's a map:

went down last night, and on the whole had an enjoyable night. At the moment this is not a session but a singaround with the fiddle players trying to squeeze a set in where they can. It's the first time i've every heard half of a pub singing in 3 part harmonies!?!?! There were quite a few english songs about hunting and with 'tally-ho' in the chourus and at times it all sounded more like a victorian church choir. But they are a very welcoming bunch and I think they simply need more tune orientated musicians to get down. The pub is fairly small but the beer is cheap - £2.10 for a Guinness! If your up this way then i'd check with "domnull" first if your after a majority of tunes at a session. Mostly a good intermediate standard but it has to be said they have a very good bodhran player, probably the best I've seen in the area, beautiful tone and variation. I'll be popping back again sometime but hopefully they'll have some more melodic players in by then!

Flaxton - nr York UK - Wed nights

Thanks, Dan - we enjoyed your visit. Come on punters, you heard Dan - we 'need more tune-orientated players to get down', and I agree!!

As for having 'some more melodic players in' next visit, I'd like to think we need more *melody* players, but having heard my playing, maybe not :-)

NB the map on the 'Details' tab is wrong - rather use the map link which I submitted above (22/5/06)
