Blue dragon in Abq

I've only been to this a few times, but it is the only, weekly, non-slow session in New Mexico that I know of. Purportedly, intermediate level and up, it's a group of friendly people who seemed reasonably tolerant of less than intermediate level playing. There was a wonderful piper there one of the times I went, and lots of fiddles and mandolins. More irish tunes than the session up in Santa Fe, but lots of southern and a few scottish as well. The coffeehouse is extremely music friendly, they put on lots of events and the audience is very appreciative. Comfortable chairs, good coffee and grub, and no smoke in the front room where the music goes on.

Blue dragon schedule

oops, forgot to note the time - starts 7:30/8:00 pm, goes to whenever or closing time, whichever comes first (people seem to fade out around 10pm).

Pining for the fjords.....

I have it on good authority that as of February 2004:

"The Blue Dragon session is done, dead, over, finished, six feet under, passed on, defunct, never more, etc. The owner wanted us to switch to once a month. We said screw it. New venue for now will be Irish Mac's coffeehouse which is on Yale just south of central near the University."

Looks to be on Tuesdays, I'll have to check it out & post details.

It's back.

Session at the Blue Dragon is back. Meets every other week on Thursday starting around 7 pm and going until 10 pm or so. Next session is Dec. 1, 2005. A few of the old regulars do not attend much any more.

Dead again

Blue Dragon has opened and closed and opened and closed and now seems to be closed again. The group has moved to Whole Foods, but I am not sure if that will last. Anyone coming to Albuquerque can contact me by email and I will let you know what is going on.

This is more of an American style jam than an Irish session. Everyone tends to play on every tune including multiple bodhrans and guitars. If you want to play tunes and sing some songs with a bunch of really nice people, this is a good venue, but if you are looking for a serious Irish session this may not be your cup of tea.
