I have posted this session without actually having attended it in hopes that someone who has can fill me (and everyone else) in on the details. I get nervous about attending sessions before I know anyone else there. But Tuesday is a good day for me, so I hope to soon.
This session is run by John McGillian (accordion) and John Brennan (guitar/fiddle). Lovely session, goes from 8 to 11pm on Tuesday evenings. Not too many other people join in - maybe another accordion, fiddle or bodhran. It's generally pretty quiet though - good listening for beginning players.
I have had the pleasure of meeting John and John at a session once before, and you are absolutely right--they are the nicest guys and even gave me a copy of their CD. I am just a lttle shy around such fantastic players and tend to kind of go into my shell a little bit. But maybe it's time to break out a little!
More than 6 months later......I finally got up the courage to go to this session. It was a great time! John and John are very funny guys! It was a smallish session; 5 altogether. Perfect. Played a little, listened and learned a lot.
Seriously, though, the crowds have been a little thin, so we hope that a buncha folks come out to help us ENACT OUR EVIL PLAN!!!! THE WORLD IS MINE!!! BWAA-HAA-HAAAAA!
ok Guys - Darin and Brendan (and of course my good friend Andee!) - I enjoyed listening to you guys play - and joining in when I could. Brendan is a very fine fiddle player, up among the cream of them all, as is Darin. I hope the time I was there was unusually noisy, which is what you guys said. THere seemed to be a fair number of the prefrontal-lobotomied city zombie types further on through in the bar. I'd love to have a quiet few tunes with you guys somewhere out in the back of beyond, but my experience of that pub was like the many amped sessions I've seen and been part of over here. Hope you can calm them down and get them to listen to youse, cos musically you guys are up there with the best.
Went tonight just to check it out. Really the last session venue in Philly I'd never been to. As mentioned above, it is miked, so you'll hear lots of Brendan and Darin, allowing you to make a few mistakes in the background and not really be heard by anybody.
As far as specifics for the place, the exact address is:
The pub is actually located in the Phoenix building, a pretty big hotel from what I could see. There is valet parking at the building which will run you $13. There is limited street parking, and there is a lot across the street on 16th Street that is supposedly pretty cheap on weeknights although the sign outside the lot indicates otherwise. I just went for the valet myself because it was easier. Oh, and music officially starts around 8 PM and goes til about 11.
Effective Sept 2006, the session will be held on alternate weeks, begining Sept 12. Not 1st and 3rd, just every other week. Drop me a line if you want to double check the schedule, or check the restaurant's website on their music calendar: http://www.tirnanogphilly.com
Just to clarify, this session is still alive, but takes place every other Tuesday evening from 8 to 11. It has returned to the totally unplugged format, a plus, I think. The schedule for the next little while: Sessions take place on Jan 30; Feb 13 & 27; Mar 13 & 27; and Apr 10 & 24. Please drop me an email if you have any questions. Hope to see yiz!
Haven't posted an update here in a while, but this session is indeed still going, with Brendan Callahan and myself heading things up. The session has been completely acoustic for over a year now, with great results. The session generally runs 8 to 11 on alternate Tuesdays. Here are the next few months' worth of session dates:
July 8 & 22
August 5 & 19
September 2, 16 & 30
October 14 & 28
All the same, feel free to drop me a PM if you want to confirm the date. All are welcome, so come on by!
Yep, we're still at it at TNN every other Tuesday, also sans Mr. Callahan as himself has been living near Beantown for almost a year now. I'm almost always there, and usually joined by some of our local heroes: Brian Boyce, John McGillian, Bob Michel, Páraic Keane, etc. I have to say, the tunes have been KILLER at TNN for the last few months... something in the drinking water, I think. Please come by when you're in town and say hi. It's rarely crowded in there on a Tuesday night, so bring friends. LOTS of friends, who like to spend money on beer (they have something like 20 taps).
Here are the dates of upcoming sessions for the next few months:
The Tuesday night session at Tír na nOg has been terminated, effective immediately. Thanks to all who have shared in the tunes and craic for nearly ten years! All inquiries regarding music at Tir na nOg moving forward should be made directly toward the restaurant.
Has anyone attended this session?

Ok, thanks Cara--it sounds like it may be not a good one for a beginner then--but maybe I will come just to listen.

Both John and John are really sweet and friendly - talk to them, I'm sure they'd invite you to play a few tunes.
