No more session in Cruises?

Well, that's what I heard from a reliable source. I still hope it's not true, though. Last time I was in Ennis, I actually failed to find a good music session in the pub. Does anybody know what's going on there at the moment?

Re: No more session in Cruises?

I remember hearing something similar a couple of years ago. I think it had changed hands and the new management had decided that 'pub bands' were preferable to trad sessions.

That makes me sad, I was in Cruises in March, and there was a brilliant session that night... went on till about 2 in the morning! It was quite a friendly session as well. I haven't been back to Cruises since then (have been to some other ones in Ennis though), but I thought the sessions were still going.

Cruises Pub in Ennis

i just wanted to come on here and genuinely apologise for any bad feelings caused by cruises due to some questionable music choices........(more than some)...i have only recently taken over the bar managers job and while i respect all who came before me i realise that to do anything except being wholeheartedly irish is wrong for cruises and while im sure would have some short term gain, such as "trad disco", ultimately takes away from what is quickly becoming a bar very close to my own heart

as such id like to welcome any musicians back to cruises or if anyone would like to talk to me about trad sessions, id love to hear from you....we arent there yet but we are trying.trad sessions have now resumed monday tuesday and wednesday, saturday evenings and sunday nights and god willing more nights to come.any one man bands or other groups whether they be d'arcy or kevin martin or institutions of ennis like porterbreak or dilemma are as commited as myself to returning cruises to what it should be.......i only hope that any trad musicians will come down and give us a chance or join in!!

regards

Re: Cruises Pub in Ennis

I popped my head in the door there last week, in the hope of finding music - I found heartbreak instead!
It's now full PA guy-with-guitar-and-backing-track playing come-all-yes. Suits the tourists, I suppose, but an abomination to what used to be there.
It was never the very best session location though - too many tourists taking pictures of musicians.

I managed to fall in with a very fast session at O'Sullivan's, and had a great time!

Re: Cruises Pub in Ennis

On a more general thread, I was in Ennis a few weeks ago (the lead up to the fleadh nua) and I found it difficult to find decent tunes.

They were either too fast (and it's not like I can't keep up), badly out of time (!) or packed to the rafters with tourists which made it difficult to get to the session itself, which looked like a boys club anyway in this particular bar.

I've been to Ennis before and there's been amazing tunes and great times. I was really disappointed this time; The Old Ground didn't seem to have tunes on, despite asking the staff and others around.

Coming back to Cruises - there were two/three guys having a quiet tune there on the Mon/Tues and they were lovely. Whilst I agree that it had been set up primarily for tourists and not the tuneistas, they were very welcoming and it was nice to play in a session that had groove!

I could have just been on a quiet week but anyways..

Re: Cruises Pub in Ennis

There were 3 young lads playing early Saturday evening when we was there (just listening) in April (fiddle, flute, guitar)- joined by an older guy on banjo (maybe our own banjoburger?). They played some nice tunes on and off for an hour or so (maybe some occasional bluegrass/Cape Breton influence?). Then some other guys came in and were obviously setting up for a quite different kind of gig. We left at that point.
Good luck with the new venture, Gearoid, and getting the place ringing with trad again. Great setting for it.

Still on

Spent one night in Ennis last Tuesday due to early flight out of Shannon the next morning. Stumbled upon Cruises within a block of our hostel (Rowan Tree Hostel - highly recommended, BTW). Banner outside says "Live Irish trad session nightly" or something to that effect. Found a young piper and a guitar player/singer inside who were quite welcoming and we had a nice little session. They wrapped up at 11 though. Wasn't too crowded or noisy and some people were listening attentively.
