Great pub for a session. This was the home of diddly dee in the Gaeltacht area for years and used to have music every night during the holidays. Now limited to a Monday night.
Francie Mooney [Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh's dad] leads the session and you can be sure of some great driving Donegal fiddling. Aodh the barman is a fine fiddler and piano box player and often joins in.
Hello Breandan, Darach here. Just that you mentioned Huidi Beag's pub in Bun Beag. It was here in 1974 that I got my first love of Irish music and song. I was there for a weekend with a friend from Gaoth Dobhair and we were in Huidi's pub. I was singing Beatles songs and Leonard Cohen at the time. At this session there was a young girl singing and playing the fiddle with her father. The whole atmosphere of the music and the language sent me. I mentioned it to my friend about starting to play traditional music and he mentioned that he went to whistle classes in Dublin with Micheal O hAlmhain. I started in 1974 and never looked back, as they say. I lost touch with this friend in 1973 but by sheer coincidence I met him again 2 months ago. He lives beside where I work. The young girl and her father were Mairead and Phroinsias O Maoinigh. They were my inspiration to start playing.
I just got back a couple weeks ago from Gaoth Dobhair (Frankie Kennedy Winter Music School), my 4th trip in 5 years. This is always the place to start and end the trip. Francie and Gearoid Mooney were there, and another great fiddler Stephen Campbell, and Dermot Byrne dropped in as well. For a Donegal fiddle addict like myself, this place is Heaven.
