Good Session

Seems to be one of the more popular sessions for some of the folkworks undergraduates and some of the graduates. Good session with mix of Irish, Scottish and English music with some Scandinavian tunes thrown in as well. The pub has later licence so sessions tend to carry on till reasonably late. Standard of playing is generally good and tunes are normally played fast, which can be a bit daunting.

Slight update on this session - officially still ongoing through the summer, but many of the uni students who play here aren't in Newcastle for the summer, so the session is gonna be relatively quiet till mid August / September.

Listened-in last Thursday - nice mix of tunes and some lively harmonica! Started late (about 10pm).

Defunct

As of a couple of weeks ago, this session was terminated due to the closure of the pub. Both the loss of this session and this pub (which had a massive amount of musical history dating back to the 60s) are to the detriment of Newcastle: R.I.P "The Egypt"

RE : Resurrection of the Egypt (geddit?)

Some background - I've heard that the credit crunch is to thank for this. The plans for building lots of expensive flats on the site have been held up thanks to nobody having any money. The planning permission remains in place and the pub is holding on through short tem tenancy. It seems very reminiscent of the situation woth the Rose and Crown that was across the road. A contact in CAMRA suspects the pub may be there for the next 1-2 years.
