Carl Nelkin
Carl Nelkin - possessor of a fine tenor voice in the grand tradition of Irish tenors - is a member of the Dublin Jewish community, Renowned as a cantor in Jewish circles, Carl has a grá for the Irish material that he also grew up with. And so the album is a 50/50 mix of songs in Yiddish and the sorts of parlour songs which are well-suited to his rich tenor. Some of us at "thesession" will crinkle our noses at Carl's choice of Irish material, since it won't be "pure drop" enough for some tastes. And fair enough; Carl doesn't set out to be the next Tunny or Harte. But this trad-head applauds his vision and it's nice to see someone reflect two important aspects of their cultural heritage in one recording. Carl is joined by Peter Eades (keybaords, guitar, percussion), Christy Sheridan (banjo, mandolin), Vince Milne (fiddle) and James Wilson (pipes, whistles) and they're equally adept at playing music from both the Jewish and Irish genres. The album is released on Carl's own label. If you'd like to find out more, email him at cnelkin@iol.ie
