Excellent album from Mick Conneely(fiddle, Greek Bouzouki), with Niall O Callanain (bouzouki),and Mick Conneely Snr (fiddle). Mayo based fiddle player, who previously toured with De Danann(1991-1995) and who plays each Wednesday night in Matt Molloy's in Westport.
Mick Conneely is a terrific fiddle player. His influences of Brendan Mulkere and Frankie Gavin are evident in his playing but in particular, one can hear echoes of the old recordings of Sligo fiddle master, James Morrison, who influences Mick greatly. It is a very generous album (1 hour long) and he plays great old tunes as well as some newer composed ones from Charlie Lennon and 4 of Carl Hession's tunes! This has an East Galway and Sligo feel to (I may go as far to say I hear echoes of Clare fiddling!) and it's difficult to mark it down into one category of fiddle playing other than 'pure class.' This is an album for all Irish musicians, take it from someone who doesn't listen hugely to fiddlers!
