This album is light, bubbly, and a lot of fun. The jig and reel sets fly by at a dizzying pace, but manage to avoid sounding rushed. Being a fan of both ITM and American traditional music, I really like the way Reeltime combines ITM with old-time Nashville country and western influences. A couple of the tracks on this album even feature the talents of New Zealand harmonica virtuoso Brendan Power, playing in a distinctively American harmonica style.
There are some pleasant renderings of traditional songs, sung by the band's fiddler Mairin Fahy, but my favorite tracks are the instrumental sets. Track #4 is one of the most tender waltzes I have ever heard, and makes me yearn to play the accordion. Most of the tune sets have cutesy little names like "The Trucks of Bohermore" (track #1) and "Guiness in Germany" (track #4), but I took the liberty of listing the tune names rather than the track titles.
This is a wonderfully unique offering by a superb group of musicians, and makes for some nice listening. Buy it for that next long road trip. It makes terrific driving music.
Great Fun, This
