"Kathleen Keane comes from a generation of Chicago Irish/American musicians, many of whom are among the most respected names in Irish music. She is one of the youngest of this community of musicians which includes such names as Liz Carroll, Jimmy Keane, Marty Fahey, John Williams, Brendan McKinney, Sean Cleland, Lawrence Nugent and many more. This recording clearly establishes her as a musician who has earned a respected place in that community.
"Her musical journey has taken her from the most traditional roots right through to the most cutting edge and contemporary versions of Irish music. I have known her as a child when she was a prodigy on the tin whistle right through to when she was fronting the very popular alternative/Irish band, The Drovers. She has never been afraid to take on new musical challenges or to push the boundaries. This recording is mainly traditional yet the contemporary flavour is still evident. It is her vocals that represent her most contemporary edge. When she plays fiddle a wide variety of influences from the more traditional to the more innovative are on display. It is when she plays whistle that her solid traditional background is most in evidence. For any musician, bridging the gap between the most traditional and contemporary would be sufficient achievement in itself except that in Kathleen's case she has managed to do that while at the same time being a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.
"This recording beautifully brings together and blends her many talents and influences. If her musical journey continues with the current level of diverse influence we will have lots more to look forward to in the future.
Kathleen is now in Gaelic Storm, and is the best thing that could have ever happened to them. Her first recorded project with them is Tree, and I find myself forwarding to the tracks on which she plays whistle (low and high) or fiddle. She definitely is their strongest trad element. She's awesome.
She is now the strongest trad element of Bad Haggis. (The only one beside Eric Rigler!) Personally, I haven't liked Gaelic Storm much since she left. She is an amazing multi-instrumentalist, and a terrific step dancer, but I don't care too much for her voice.
