"Con Cassidy: Traditional Fiddle Music From Donegal"
Published by Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí, 2007, CNF 004
Someone knows my heart and inclinations well... I was all smiles when opening the post this morning and finding this, a CD of Con's music and a nice insert with pictures and notes, brilliant. Thanks to all those that put the work behind making this happen. I'm sure over time we'll all be able to put names and links to the gan ainms... The Cassidy house gave me good cheer, we chatted, laughed, told tales, played music, danced ~ fine people, missed...
What blessed music...and to hear his voice again... It was not age as he says that lessened the stroke of his bow, it was the world changing around him, everything in sets, in pub sessions rushed and with the push for 'new'... Given a choice, to spend time in a pub, no matter where or with who, with tune after tune, set after set, rushed, manic, erratic, or to have tea and music with this fine gentleman and his family, there is now thought required, it would be to spend time with Con. I hope there is a place beyond this existence where that will happen, and, without doubt, with a bit of dancing too...
I have always had Con's music to listen to, and this is a blessing of more and I have been listening to it most of the day, wonderful, and that his voice is woven in with the tunes...
Again, to those who did the work, go raibh mile ma'agat...
The weather's been so blooming awful here in Leitrim that, on the first sunny morning for at least a fortnight, you can imagine my delight when the postie delivered today's mail and I discovered that one of the items was a brand new CD by the Teelin, SW Donegal fiddler Con Cassidy.
Con died in 1994, but Rab Cherry and Dermot McLaughlin have collected together tunes he recorded for 'The Brass Fiddle', several RTÉ radio programmes and a BBC NI series - all from the 1980s, when Con was in his seventies.
The album's an absolute delight (36 tracks of tremendously vibrant fiddle music, belying Con's age at the time) and released on the Cairdeas na bhFidléirí label (the first of its recordings to be devoted to a single fiddler). You can find out more about it at http://www.donegalfiddlemusic.ie and the CD is being distributed by Claddagh, http://www.claddaghrecords.com.

Jeremy decided to axe the discussion and move it all here, after I'd borrowed the bit that is now at the end., which was added before Jeremy made his axe and move... Ah well, it is that good that we can say it all again twice ~ no, three times, using Geoff's words ~
Track 17, for the moment, is tagged as "The Slieve League Slip Jig", but is another of the several 'gan ainm' tunes on the CD. The temporary name at least covers the area where it is found. If a proper name comes up for it, please let me know and all adjustments will be made...
