I just listened to this album for the first time. This is a great album, it deserves the high regard people have for it.
Kevin Burke's liner notes are priceless:
"Although this album combines modern arrangements and recording techniques, I have tried to retain as much as possible, the old traditional moods of Irish music, as it used to be played long ago in rural areas by small groups of musicians. Many of these older musicians used to play by themselves and for themselves as an expression and a relaxation, just like the old bluesmen. At other times it meant relief from more worldly troubles, a therapy. Today impact and communication are regarded as essential, and I feel that at times people forget that the musician often plays for his own enjoyment. Traditional music in Ireland sometimes suffers from an overdose of severity. This is probably brought about by the tense atmosphere of competitions in which so many young people in the last 20 years have been forced to play. Something I'll always remember about the Irish musicians that I met when I was a child, was that there was always an element of fun, in their playing and in their music. Sometimes this gave way to a plaintive wistful mood, but the fun was never far away. Good humour is something I've always liked in music, and I hope this record leaves you happy." --Kevin Burke
This is one of the few CDs that I have that I can put on and listen to the the whole thing through without wanting to change the track. Every single track is wonderful! I love the solo tracks and the two that he does with Jackie Daly best I think, and the ending set is also really great. Then, it's also interesting to see how Kevin brings in other instruments to back him on the other tracks.
And yes glauger, his liner notes are wonderful. What would we do with out Kevin?
I think Mulligan records was taken over by Green Linnet. I got a copy of an old recording distributed by Mulligan, but now it's being reissued by G. L. I think it's the same with this one.
Does anybody out there have an old copy of Kevin Burke's "If the Cap Fits" on cd (preferable) or vinyl that they'd like to part with, in good condition? Searching the web produces "unavailable", or ludicrously high prices (for me, a man of modest means). T'anks to one and all...
Priding myself on being no less that twenty years behind the times, I have, with mighty thanks to the lovely and talented "Nell", finally secured, and therefore heard, a copy of this cd... brilliant! A fiddler's Desert Island disc, to be sure. I like to keep current...
I have searched the Internet high and low for a reasonably priced new copy of the CD "If the Cap Fits" by Kevin Burke. It appears to be out of print in the USA, and only sort of marginally available elsewhere. And it shows up used and new on ebay for rather high prices sometimes.
Well, I just discovered that you can buy it for $15US + $2.50 shipping directly from Kevin Burke's website. They also sell it for 14 euros. So if anyone else is interested in buying a copy of this famed but elusive album, go to: http://www.kevinburke.com/html_links_music.html#capfits
Sorry if this is "old news", but I hope this message is useful to somebody.
Re: Finally found it! Kevin Burke - If the Cap Fits
A mighty buy!... after years looking for a reasonably priced copy, the lovely and talented "Nell" responded to my bleating right here at the Session, and did a cd swap with me (from England to Canada)... I've just about peeled the notes from the vinyl (?) with repeated listening... so I just might need another. T'anks much!
Track 5 is a set of 3 tunes, not 2: Star of Munster -> John Stenson's #1 -> John Stenson's #2. This is not indicated correctly in the track listing here. But if you search the tunes database on this site, both tunes are available and have the "1" and "2" in their names in accord with Kevin Burke's names.

Anybody ever play along to the whole mega-set on side 2 of "If the Cap Fits?" Did you need physio afterwards?

Mulligan?
Why is it these Mulligan records seem to outshine the stuff done after it?

Bobby Casey's
I think this listing should be corrected to read:
Caislean Na Nor Bobby Casey's Hornpipe
Particularly because it is a fabulous set the changeup in this set is, I think, exquisite

Good find. This is still one of my favorite itm recordings by any individual or band. Learned the opening set of reels last year. Great fun.

This is a very fine CD. Kevin Burke is on fire. Also very good are Sweeney's Dream and Solo Fiddle (the live concert CD).
