Dublin In Vigo
Wow!!!
A legend in the ancient Irish "Book of Conquests" has it that Ireland was founded by the son of the king of Galicia, a region in the northwest of Spain. Whether this is true or not, the music and language of this country have more in common with Ireland, Brittany and other Celtic regions than with the rest of Spain. This recording encompasses the Galician music, mixed with some incredible Irish music. This recording was really instigated by their meeting of the Galician bagpiper (Gaita) Carlos Nuņez. The "Pilgrimage to Santiago" (the first 5 tracks), which tells the tale of the traditional pilgrims' route to the enchanted Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela starts out with the rythm of the Txalaparta -- wooden planks hit with sticks. It moves through several traditional dances, then a love song, played on a three-stringed violin, and finally to some beautiful but eerie Gregorian chants. Then, onto "Dueling Chanters." Absolutely INCREDIBLE piping here from Paddy Moloney on Uilleann pipes and Gaita player Carlos Nuņez. This track is worth buying the album for. Then onto the 11 minute epic "Galician Overture" played with a full orchestra. The Chieftains weave in some Mexican and Cuban influences with "Guadalupe" and "Galleguita / Tutenkhamen". The final track, "Dublin in Vigo," was recorded live in a pub called The Dublin in the Galician port of Vigo. Here the Chieftains are truly in their element, alternating Galician melodies with wild Irish dances while the pub's patrons clap and cheer in the background.

This recording is amazing. Though there aren't many "tunes" per se that most people could play, let alone be on The Session, I thought I might as well review it seeing as it's not here yet. I skipped a few tracks in my review, anyone who wants to complete it, go right ahead
