Hi!
I'm from the wilds of West Cork, not too far from Bantry. The music around there is pretty strongly Sliabh Luachra style, with some strange local tunes thrown in for good measure. I can also (usually) play the more popular stuff with the best of them - with the noted exception of strathspeys, which I've never been able to figure out. Sliabh Luachra is not noted for its strathspey players...
I play flute and fiddle - mostly flute. I've just finished a degree in music (and Italian, but that's another story) from University College Cork, and at the moment I'm spending a year in Columbia, Missouri, teaching flute, fiddle, whistle, and Irish language, and gigging occasionally. It's great, but people keep emailing me about all the wonderful festivals and concerts that are happening in Ireland, and that I'm missing. I'll deal with them when I get home though...
At various stages, I've dabbled with button accordion, singing (that was pretty short-lived!), and piano, so I can pick out tunes on those, but not actually play them. It's an important distinction. I'll demonstrate for anyone who doesn't understand.
Deirdre
