I've never really been around the culture of Irish music physically, all I know is what I've picked up from recordings and videos on the Internet. Started coming here originally for the dots to teach myself the tunes, but I'm good enough to learn by ear now, so I just browse the discussions, and use the Members/Tunebook section to figure out which tunes are popular.
