Hi all,
I'm 25 years old and originally from Ireland, but have been travelling all over for the past few years. I'm currently living in Canada.
Despite being Irish, I'm relatively new to the whole trad thing. I grew up playing rock music and only got into traditional stuff after seeing Planxty's 2004 show at Vicar St.
I've been playing guitar for years in pretty much every style other than classical or jazz. I've also experimented with 5-string banjo and mandolin.
For the past year or so, my weapon of choice has been the whistle. I mainly play the low D, since a D whistle is far and away the most useful in a session and I find the regular D too shrill for my liking. I've also got a low F that I just love to play, but at a session it's about as useful as a bunch of African barking spiders.
I've decided I'm going to take the plunge and learn to play the uilleann pipes... It' s been an ambition of mine since I first got into trad music. I've been saving my cash and will hopefully be ordering a set in mid to late August.
Update: I've finally (in mid/late November) got my first set of pipes. It's Pat Sky practice set. At the moment, when I try to play I look like a demented chicken and sound like a very distressed donkey. With a bit of practice and tuition, I hope that will start to change before too long...
