|"Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy." Psalm 33:3|
I'm a 15-year-old whistle, flute, recorder, and bodhran player from Texas who will be playing the pipes (Uilleann and hopefully SSP) eventually, and a tiny bit of piano, mandolin, guitar, and I play in my Church's handbell choir, which I am trying to arrange ITM for ("Good luck, Joe" Yes, I know).
I didn't like much but all the popular crap out there and then as I started liking music more, I heard "Highland Cathedral", started listening to more folk music, and discovered ITM, my dad bought me a whistle, and here I am today. I've played whistle for a year and a half or so, and the flute for a year, and bodhran for a few months... I didn't start actually "playing" the recorder (that is, actually making MUSIC with it) until more recently... maybe 2 years ago... I forget now.
I'm pretty much completely self-taught, and I've picked up the ornaments and playing pretty quickly, mostly because I got so bored with the stuff they give you in that Feadog book .
I also write a lot of my own tunes, and I compose other kinds of music along with some Celtic-themed stuff. Other than music, I don't have many hobbies :-). What can I say? Music is my life.
You can go here: http://josephscarmichael.googlepages.com/ and find some of the (better) tunes I've written.
Let's see, anything else about me?....
I'm 6' 2", a Christian, I can read dots only well enough to transcribe a tune from it, in about 30 minutes to an hour, and I have 2 brothers and three sisters.
My dad plays mandolin, guitar, accordion (piano), and bass, and wants to learn accordion more in ITM, button accordion, and Russian bayan.
Older brother plays guitar, drums, bit of mando and bass, and my youngest sister plays guitar, piano, and sings.
The rest of my family pretty much mostly sings, though I'm the mostly only one who plays ITM, though my dad is starting to pick it up more.
I play with the Dallas-based group, the Celtic Knotheads.
My main influences are The Chieftains, The Kells, and Lunasa (very different!). Other influences include Kathleen Keane, Mike McGoldrick, Catherine McEvoy, Seamus Ennis, The Bothy Band, Zac Leger, Stephen Doherty, Beau Davis, Dan Lowery, Mickey Dunne, Killavil, and Flogging Molly (not really ITM, I know).
