hi there, i play flute and whistle, keyboards and sing... can't afford the best kind of flute i'd nearly die for (the wonderful virginia maker, you know who), and tho i did have one of his beautiful bamboo ones it came to a crushing end (not my fault!). so instead i am humbled to be loaned flutes by wonderful people who mentor me in various ways, and one day i'll be able to do the same for someone else! i rather fancy my slightly out-of-perfect-pitch-el-cheapo whistles that i never hesitate to chuck in my backpack or the glovebox of my car so i can whip it out while waiting for the lights to change and get a few notes in... ! (while noone's looking). i'm shy in sessions ad the same tunes seem to come out.... i just love the playing of emer mayock, june ni chormaic, the wonderful flute player from kornog jean-michel veillon, mike mcgoldrick of course, and oh if ever you get the chance to hear any indian classical flute, then my favourite player i would recommend to you - hariprasad chaurasia (check out the album Live at Khajuraho). i was lucky enough to live in india for 2.5 months in '04 and studied indian classical singing and flute in varanasi. what a trip. loved it. would love to go back and study fulltime for 6months or so, and then come back home and teach introduction to indian classical music classes here. of course the only people that seem to be able to afford to migrate out of india to countries like nz tend not to be musicians. i don't think there are any decent indian musos in my hometown of christchurch. ... what else can i tell you? ... love singing and writing too - songs that seem to arrive in any random genre (trad ballad, contemp ballad, jazz, blues, and one something like a kiwi band called trinity roots). singing is much easier than playing flute. i do both in my band emeralds and greenstone. well hey, i've rambled enough, that's me. email me if you wanna know anything else. take care :-) xx lawsie
