I've been playing flute (an Olwell, for those interested in such things) for about 3 years. This comes after 15 years of playing Celtic music (mostly Irish) on hammered dulcimer, so I started with the advantage of having a bunch of tunes in my head. Once the fingers started learning to listen to the tunes in my head, things started coming fairly quickly so I've got a repertoire that currently has a couple hundred reels with a commensurate smattering of jigs and a few other things.
I'm still working my way across the gap between "playing tunes at tempo with standard ornaments" and "making Celtic music." Perhaps that's a journey that doesn't really have an end.
