I live near Portland, Oregon
I have been known to sing and to flog music out of guitars, mandolins, fiddles and banjos (and some other instruments).
Irish trad is my mainstay nowadays. But sometimes I venture out into pub songs, old-time, bluegrass, older country, and rock.
What I think is important for playing music:
Listen
Favor learning by ear
Play by ear
Be physically relaxed and mentally fierce
Love every note you play; if you don't, it will be obvious to others.
Technique is a means not an end
Play music to create beauty and joy, not for some kind achievement like money or first place
