I'm an beginning to intermediate mandolin player in a band that plays for an Irish dancing group on a college campus in the USA.
I play a Carbon Fiber Mix A5 mandolin. My favorite wooden instrument was a Weber Bitterroot, but I sold it.
I sometimes play for a contra dance band as well.
I'm self taught and after 17 years of working things out on my own from standard written notation (the dots), I had my first lessons. My instructor insisted on learning by ear exclusively. I memorize tunes quickly now and I also picked up some great hints on ornamentation of tunes. I recommend lessons if you can afford it. Best money I've spent.
Cheers.
