barriobarri

In 1974, while traveling in Ireland, I fell hard for Celtic music. I had played piano as a child, but it didn't feel right for Celtic. I took up the penny whistle and have enjoyed it for many years, both for playing Celtic and for improvising with other musicians whenever someone has a guitar. Still, my opportunities for playing Celtic were limited. A little over three years ago, I picked up a friend's piano accordion and was struck almost immediately by its possibilities for Celtic. With the accordion has come my musical renaissance. I just love to play it, and have become more accomplished at it than at my other instruments, piano, guitar, harmonica, pennywhistle and mandolin. Since taking up the accordion, I've heard more contradance music, have learned to love its many forms, and frequently attend dances. I've found some other folks with shared interests and comparable abilities for regular sessions here in Tucson, AZ, through the Tucson Friends of Traditional Music. The repertoire of tunes I can play at contra speed is growing. I still play mostly by ear, but my sight-reading ability has improved recently. Haven't played for a dance yet, but think I'd like to as I continue to gain confidence in my playing.
Traveled in Ireland again in summer 2006 with accordion and whistles and had a great time. Back home, joined band, Rare Ould Times, that plays traditional ballads and tunes. Played for St. Patrick's Day Celebration in Tucson and at O'Malley's Pub so far. Booked to play contra dance this fall. Confidence growing, having fun!
