west-coaster

Flute, whistle and fiddle player living on the wild and beautiful west coast of Scotland. I started playing classical flute in 1980 and was introduced to Irish music in my early 20s soon after moving up here in 1992, by a neighbour. I took up the fiddle (mainly Scottish piping-style) in 1996 and teach that and flute locally.

I listen to lots of different music and particularly like trad-style jazz (Grappeli, Billie Holiday, Madeleine Peyroux etc), some progressive folk (Jethro Tull, Flook) and have recently been dipping my toe in the world music ocean (Vieux Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate from Mali - amazing) and some Indian flute music, which is just beautiful. I like gritty Irish and Scottish instrumental traditional stuff, nothing too tidy, and am a big fan of some of the Scottish Gaelic song melodies from the Western Highlands and the Islands.
