BarryM

Instruments: Octave mandolin (primarily), mandolin, bouzouki, tenor banjo, a little fiddle, folk guitar. NYC area. Born 1956

Played many years with some NY/NJ friends in a band called Pipe on the Hob. During the first years we played several nights a week - not always as a band, often mixing in with whatever sessions we could find - but almost always together. Our last gig (year number 13) was at the Dublin House in Red Bank, NJ on St. Patrick's day 2004. Spent a lot of time involved with the NYC Irish Arts Center and the annual ITM festival when it was located at Snug Harbor, Staten Island.

Marriage, family, job, mortgage, hang gliding, golf, skiing, and other pursuits have pushed ITM down the list.

1/4 Irish on my mother's side. Learned to play in the NYC area; initially in my basement with recordings. Eventually I tried a teacher at the Irish Arts Center and learned the mechanics of playing. Then I got lucky and found Eileen Ivers and took lessons from her. She taught music like a language.

Being a NY non-native (Eastern Connecticut : Joke: I grew up playing cowboys and Indians with real Indians), I always felt like a bit of interloper in Bronx sessions, which I discovered are really family/neighborhood events. I guess that's the fate of a happenstance rennaisance musician.

Disclosure: Occasionally pick up the fiddle and I work for that safe-but-boxy car company. So if I mention "fiddling around in the back seat," my meaning should be fairly transparent.
